Hollywood turns the cameras on itself in the ultimate pre-Code satire of the studio system! Before "meta-cinema" was even a term, M-G-M delivered a wildly hilarious, and uninhibited look at itself with Bombshell. Already a screen superstar at the age of 22, Jean Harlow's skill as a masterful comedienne creates a career-defining performance of self-parody as Lola Burns, a glamorous, platinum-blonde movie star utterly suffocated by her own celebrity. Surrounded by a parasitic entourage—including a freeloading father (Frank Morgan), an obnoxious brother (Ted Healy), and a thieving secretary—Lola's biggest headache is E.J. "Space" Hanlon (Lee Tracy), a hyperactive, fast-talking studio press agent who stops at absolutely nothing to fabricate outrageous headlines and keep her name in the gossip rags. When Lola finally rebels against the madness surrounding her image to seek out a "normal" life—even trying to adopt a baby and falling for an eccentric blue-blood poet (Franchot Tone)—the studio's machinery aggressively manipulates her back into the spotlight. Directed with relentless momentum by Victor Fleming and featuring a sparkling supporting cast including Pat O'Brien and Una Merkel, Bombshell remains a landmark piece of self-revelatory satire.
