William Powell and Myrna Loy, Hollywood's most effortlessly sophisticated screen partnership, venture beyond the urbane pleasures of The Thin Man into the exhilarating disorder of Double Wedding (1937). Loy is cast as Margit Andrew. the imperious owner of a fashionable boutique, runs everyone's life—particularly that of her pliable younger sister, Irene (Florence Rice), whom she intends to marry off to the resolutely timid Waldo Beaver (John Beal). Her immaculate plans go gloriously awry when Irene is captivated by Charlie Lodge (William Powell), a fast-talking bohemian artist who makes his home in a lavish automobile trailer. Margit marches in dismissing the interloper—and finds herself disconcertingly intrigued. Charlie answers with a campaign of inspired mischief, stiffening Waldo's spine while loosening Margit's iron grip on propriety. Double Wedding is a prime example of the timeless chemistry of its two stars at their very best.
