The Second Act is the latest provocation from France’s enfant terrible Quentin Dupieux (Rubber, Deerskin). It is an absurdist love letter to terrible films and bad actors – ironically starring some of the biggest and best actors in France – Léa Seydoux (No Time to Die), Vincent Lindon (Titane), and Louis Garrel (Little Women). It takes the form of a film-within- a-film – an aggressively banal romantic comedy, one so bad that Guillaume (Lindon) declares it is driving him away from cinema, and soon all the performers begin breaking the fourth wall to help them get through the shoot. It’s an uproarious deconstruction of the filmmaking process, one in which the actors are having a ball at poking fun at their personas, while Dupieux takes aim at AI and the entire contemporary filmmaking scene.
