African Kung-Fu Nazis is an outrageous martial-arts exploitation comedy built around a deliberately absurd alternate-history premise. After Adolf Hitler and Hideki Tojo escape the collapse of Nazi Germany, they flee to Ghana and establish the tyrannical "Ghan-Aryan" regime, maintaining power through violence, kung fu and deadly underground fighting tournaments. When the regime kills the family of a gifted martial artist, he joins the resistance and sets out for revenge, leading to an escalating battle against the dictators and their followers.
Directed by Samuel K. Nkansah, also known as Ninja-Man, and Sebastian Stein, the film is an international Ghanaian, German and Japanese collaboration shot in Ghana with a predominantly local cast alongside German and Japanese performers. Elisha Okyere, Yoshito Akimoto, Ntul Andrew and Samuel Asante star in a production that embraces the aesthetics of independently produced exploitation cinema, combining energetic martial-arts choreography, practical gore effects, broad comedy and intentionally excessive action.
The filmmakers draw inspiration from vintage Hong Kong martial-arts cinema and the deliberately disreputable traditions of grindhouse and splatter filmmaking. The result mixes kung fu, horror, comedy and satirical alternate history into an eccentric piece of modern cult cinema. Rather than attempting historical realism, African Kung-Fu Nazis uses its wildly revisionist scenario as the foundation for increasingly improbable confrontations and over-the-top fight sequences.
The film developed an international cult following through festival, midnight-movie and home-video audiences, with its unusual production history attracting attention alongside its provocative premise. This Wild Eye Releasing DVD presents African Kung-Fu Nazis for North American audiences and includes trailers among its bonus features.
