TIME OF YOUR LIFE Joe (James Cagney) is a barroom philosopher who spends his whole day drinking champagne at Nick's (William Bendix) a rundown waterfront bar filled with an edectic crew of regulars in the seediest part of San Francisco. The centerpiece characters share their hopes and fears each night, right up until Nick announces last call in this all too human film which retains much of the original dialogue from the Pulitzer-Prize winning play by William Saroyan.

THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN ARM Frank Sinatra is Frankie Machine, an ex-poker dealer who just got out of drug rehab for heroin addiction. He goes back to his old neighborhood with the intention of becoming a jazz drummer, but his crippled wife wants him to go back to dirty dealing. Dealing one last game for his old boss, he gets sucked right back into addiction. With the help of his friend Molly, Frankie goes cold turkey. The brutal scenes of the final break show the stark reality of addiction, in this first film ever to fully address the subject.

BEAT THE DEVIL Humphrey Bogart fronts a cast of slightly absurd characters which incudes Jennifer Jones, Gina Lollobrigida and Peter Lorre in this tongue-in-cheek comedy that is so subtly played that it wasn't initially recognized as such. Each traveller is on their way to Africa, con-men out to swindle each other, because they believe they can get rich with uranium holdings.
