Our six-armed man and the title layout with the sensational newspaper headlines are authentic illustrations used in the 1922 promotional campaign for Trapped by the Mormons, a film based upon The Love Story of a Mormon (1911) by English author Winifred Graham who was ardently opposed to the Mormon Church. Trapped by the Mormons was part of an energetic anti-Mormon campaign in Great Britain following World War I. Though the six-armed man never appears in the film, he represents the image the filmmakers would like you to believe when you watch Isoldi Keene (Louis Willoughby) as he tries to lure Nora Prescott (Evelyn Brent) into "the Mormon Net". Viewing Trapped by the Mormons some four score years after its release we perceive our six-armed man, as we do the film itself, as "A hilarious artifact of a by-gone era!" Today it is difficult to imagine that audiences ever took this film seriously-But in 1922 They did!
